Álvaro Siza Vieira

Architect from the Porto School of Fine Arts since 1955, with his first built work completed in 1954.

He practises in the city of Porto.

Lecturer at the Porto School of Fine Arts, the Lausanne Polytechnic School, the University of Pennsylvania, the Los Andes School in Bogotá, the Graduate School of Design at Harvard and the Faculty of Architecture of Porto.

Doctor "Honoris Causa" from: the University of Valencia, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, the University of Palermo, Menendez Pelayo University, the National University of Engineering in Lima, the University of Coimbra, Universidade Lusíada and the Federal University of Paraíba.

Distinctions

1988 - Gold Medal for Architecture from the Higher Council of the Madrid College of Architects and from the Alvar Aalto Foundation; Prince of Wales Prize from Harvard University and the European Architecture Award from the Commission of the European Communities/Mies van der Rohe Foundation.

1992 - Pritzker Prize from the Hyatt Foundation of Chicago for his body of work.

1993 - National Architecture Award from the Portuguese Architects Association.

1996 - Secil Architecture Prize.

1999 - Grand Cross of the Order of Prince Henry, awarded by the Presidency of the Portuguese Republic.

2000 - Secil Architecture Prize, among others.
