Carvalho Araújo

Architect, Braga 1961

José Manuel Castro Carvalho Araújo was born in 1961 in Braga, the city where he lives and works.

Develops design projects at both small and large scale. Completed the architecture degree in 1990.

In 1986 he took over the direction of the Carvalho Araújo Study Centre, which works as a laboratory, testing a new way of approaching the questions of creative design.

The Carvalho Araújo studio was founded in 1996 by José Manuel Carvalho Araújo in Braga, Portugal, and works on architecture and design projects of varying scales and approaches, always with an attitude that is strategic, rational and at the same time poetic.

With a multidisciplinary team of architects, product designers and communication and image designers, the essence of each project lies in the fusion of these different disciplines.

The Carvalho Araújo studio has a broad body of completed projects, not only in Portugal but also in other European countries, in Brazil, in the United States of America and in Africa.

“Architecture is far too important to be confined to building alone... It has to work almost like a place of worship, capable of provoking sensations, shivers, and other things that cannot be explained.”

Distinctions

2006 - 2nd Prize, Vodafone Building - Porto, Portugal.

2007 - 1st Prize, Academia de Música de S. João da Madeira.

2009 - Sena da Silva National Design Award, equipment category, with the Larus Rua line.

2010: BID (Bienal Ibero - Americana) , with the Larus Rua line.

2012 - Honourable Mention, Grândola Municipal Library and Archive.

2014 - Finalist in the Archdaily Building of the Year 2014, “Hospitality Architecture” category, with the “DE LEMOS” project, Viseu, Portugal.

2014 - GNRation | National Urban Regeneration Award.

2015 - Banco Popular - 1st Prize / Industrial complex, Gondomar - Portugal.

2016 - Finalist in the Ibero-American Award (X BIAU) with the project “Refúgio na Montaria”.

2021 - National Urban Regeneration Award 2021, in the category Best Intervention Under 1000 m². House in Praça Mouzinho de Albuquerque
