It was one of the pioneers of the industrial design in Portugal and has handed projects for a considerable number of sectors in national industry.
Graduated in Decorative Painting at Decorative Arts School, António Arroio. Graduated in Painting at Higher School of Fine Arts of Lisbon.
He developed pedagogical activities in the design area since 1954 on different levels on private and public education.
He initiated his design activity under Frederico George’s guidance. He opened his own atelier in Lisbon in 1959, where he developed his activity in Interior Architecture projects ever since. His strong pedagogic talent allowed that several succeeding generations of young designers were able to integrate a team in constant renovation.
Settled, since always, in a territory of diffuse boundaries, the atelier has known how to diversify its activity in distinct areas, such as urban design and public art, interior and furnishing design, architecture and rehabilitation.
In 1962 it started its collaboration with Metallurgical of Longra. In 1974 it founded the company Risco, aimed for the development of Industrial Design, Exhibition Design and Graphic Design projects.
Awards
Constantino Fernandes Award, by the National Academy of Fine Arts.
1962 –Ferreira Chaves Award, by Higher School of Fine Arts of Lisbon, destined for students the highest rating of the painting course.
1995 - Grand Official of the Order of Merit, given by the Presidency of the Portuguese Republic.
2001 – Commander of the Order of Infante D. Henrique, Annual Architecture Award by the Portuguese Section of the International Association of Art Critics, National Society of Fine Arts Medal.
2002 – Honorary Member of the Architects Order.
2003 – Honorary Doctorate by University of Aveiro
2004 – Honorary Doctorate by Technical University of Lisbon.
