Francisco Providência

He graduated in Communication Design from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto in 1985. He has been active in teaching, first as an assistant in Design and Photography at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Porto (1985-1986) and in Drawing at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto (1986-1997), and later as a visiting associate professor of Design in the Department of Communication and Art at the University of Aveiro (1997-2004). He has had his own studio since 1985. He has published various papers on design, notably in the GG collection “Diseño? Arte” (2003), is featured in “Tráfego, antologia crítica da nova visualidade portuguesa” and has taken part in several group and international design exhibitions. He was a consultant to the Portuguese Design Centre and a founding partner of the publisher and distributor Sátira design. National Design Award (1999) in the areas of Communication, Product and Environment, from the Portuguese Design Centre.

Distinctions

1998 - National Design Award: Expo '98 exhibition, Lisbon; Libera library furniture line, Julcar; “Guimarães” brand; first prize in the Exponor stand competition, with Paula Santos, ADETURN stand.

1999 - National Design Awards, (communication, equipment and environment categories), CPD.

2001 - 2nd place in the Polis competition, signage design, CPD.

2002 - First place in the competition for the design of the communication and promotion materials of the TNSJ; first place in the competition for the brand image design for São João da Madeira Municipal Council; first place in the competition for the design of promotional gifts for Lagos Municipal Council.

2004 - First place in the competition to design signage for the villages of the Algarve; first place in the competition to renew the graphic identity of IPPAR, Lisbon; first prize in the competition to design the new graphic identity for Metro Mondego and Metro Mondego sa, Coimbra; first place in the competition for signage supports for the buildings of the Convent of Christ, IPPAR, Tomar; first place in the competition for tourist signage in Lagos.

2005 - First place in the competition to design the signage for the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fátima.

2006 - 1st place in the competition for the design of signage for the CCB spaces, Lisbon.

2007 - Second place in the international urban planning and communication competition for the city of Montecatini Terme, Italy.

2008 - Red Dot Design Award, with the Larus 17º lighting column.
