Henrique Cayatte

Designer · Lisbon, 1957

Designer, illustrator, teacher and design consultant. Member of the APD (Portuguese Association of Designers).
He attended the School of Fine Arts in Lisbon. In 1990 founded his studio in Lisbon: Atelier Henrique Cayatte. He also does illustration and editorial production work, as well as consultancy on graphics and multidisciplinary and multimedia communications.
Was graphic director of several publishing houses and publications and responsible for design of the Público newspaper and magazines Ler and Egoista.

He is one of the coordinators of the post-graduate course in Urban Design, offered by the University of Lisbon, Faculty of Fine Arts and the Portuguese Centre of Design. Guest professor at the University of Aveiro, since 2004.
President of the Portuguese Design Centre (since July 2004 until April 2012).
Author of the overall design for the new Portuguese Electronic Passport and for the National Identity Card (2006), Designer of the new Electronic Passport and National Identity Card for Cape Verde (2010/11).
Consultant for EXPO '98 special design projects (in partnership with the architect Pierluigi Cerri) . 
Responsable for the overall design of the Portugal Pavilion at the EXPO 2000 in Hannover, Germany; and overall design for the Portugal Pavilion at the Expo 2005 held in Aichi, Japan.
Currently works as a graphic designer in Portugal and other countries and leads the S + A Design Henry Cayatte on the scope of design associated with architecture and public space.

Awards:
1986 - First Prize of Illustration by the Secretariat of State for Culture for the entire work of illustration.
1988 - Calouste GULBENKIAN Foundation for Children Literature Award, for the illustrations in the children’s storybook “O grande Lagarto da Pedra Azul” by Papiniano Carlos.
1999 - National Illustration Award, by the Portuguese Centre of Design.
2000 - National Illustration Award with the book “Estranhões & Bizarrocos” written by José Eduardo Agualusa.
2001 - Gulbenkian Illustration Award with the same work.
2003 - Dibner Award 2003 (EUA) Award, with the exhibition “Engenho e Obra” – Portuguese Engineering in XX century.
2003 - National Design Award 2003 (Trophy Sena da Silva – career).
2005 - Four Awards for the magazine “Egoísta” in the category of Design.
2011 - Authors Award 2011 for Better exhibition of plastic arts, with “Viva a República”.
