Henrique Cayatte

Designer, illustrator, teacher and design consultant. Member of the APD (Portuguese Association of Designers).

He studied at the Lisbon School of Fine Arts. In 1990 he founded Atelier Henrique Cayatte. He also works in illustration and editorial production, as well as consultancy in graphics and multidisciplinary and multimedia communication. He was art director for several publishers and responsible for the design of publications such as the newspaper Público and the magazines Ler and Egoísta.

He is one of the coordinators of the postgraduate course in Urban Design run by the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon and the Portuguese Design Centre; visiting professor at the University of Aveiro since 2004.

Served as President of the Portuguese Design Centre (from July 2004 to April 2012).

Designer of the new Portuguese Electronic Passport and Citizen Card (2006); designer of the new Electronic Passport and National Identity Card for Cape Verde (2010/11).

He designed the signage and communication system for EXPO 98 (in partnership with the architect Pierluigi Cerri) and the Portugal Pavilion at Expo 2000 in Hanover, Germany. He was responsible for the overall design of the Portugal Pavilion at Expo 2005, held in Aichi, Japan.

He currently works as a graphic designer in Portugal and other countries and heads S+A Design Henrique Cayatte, in the field of design linked to architecture and public space.

Distinctions

1986 - First Illustration Prize from the Secretary of State for Culture for the body of illustration work.

1988 - Calouste GULBENKIAN Foundation Prize for Children's Literature for the illustrations in the children's book O grande Lagarto da Pedra Azul, by Papiniano Carlos.

1999 - National Design Award, presented by the Centro Português de Design.

2000 - National Illustration Award with the book “Estranhões & Bizarrocos”, with text by José Eduardo Agualusa

2001 - Gulbenkian Illustration Prize for this same work.

2003 - Dibner Award 2003 (USA) with the exhibition Engenho e Obra: Engenharia portuguesa no século XX

2005 - National Design Award 2003 (Sena da Silva Trophy: lifetime achievement).

2005 - Four awards for the magazine Egoísta in the Design category.

2011 - Autores 2011 Award for Best visual arts exhibition with Viva a República.
