Tree grates with in-house design, to protect the city’s trees

Planting a tree in a pavement or a paved square is only the beginning. To grow healthily in an urban setting, a tree needs protection at its base: a tree grate covering the tree pit prevents soil compaction from foot traffic, allows rainwater to infiltrate and creates a considered transition between the canopy and the surrounding paving. That is the role of the tree grates we develop.

Our catalogue includes 17 models in two typologies. The grates are intended for tree pits already installed in public space and come in square and circular forms, in several sizes to match the diameter of the pit. Materials include cast iron, steel and corten steel, with different formal languages so the grate can be matched to the identity of the space, whether historic or contemporary, rural or urban. The tree guards are intended to protect newly planted young trees and are made of galvanised and painted steel.

The choice of material has practical implications:

  • cast iron has a more robust presence, resists oxidation and is common in historic settings;
  • corten steel develops a surface oxidation patina that protects it from corrosion, with no need for regular treatment;
  • the galvanised steel of the tree guards ensures corrosion resistance throughout the tree’s growth period, when protection is most needed.

All models can be adapted for specific projects, and we work with architecture practices, local authorities and developers on customisation projects.
